Did you know that?

Our future. It's in our hands.
This communications campaign aims to inspire people to take control of their future through learning and play an active role in achieving their full potential. We all need more skills than ever before - two out of three jobs in the future will require a higher level of skills and better qualifications. Thousands of employers - of all sizes - admit that their staff don't have the right skills needed for the future. For information and support click on logo.
Committing to the Skills Pledge

Committing to the Skills Pledge is a commitment to up-skill staff in your own time and in your own way.  You will be entitled to on-going impartial advice from a Train to Gain skills broker, college or training provider who will put together a tailored action plan - from basic skills to high-level specialist training, find the right courses, and organise a schedule that suits you.  You may be eligible for funding to cover training costs (and a contribution towards the wages of employees who are away on courses, if your company has less than 50 employees).

New Train to Gain Flexibilities

New flexibilities are being introduced regularly, these include full funding for First Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A-levels) for 19-25 year olds, and basic skills support at all levels.  New Train to Gain eligibility includes: -

·         Contracted employees (full and part-time)
·         Self-employed people
·         Second Level 2 opportunities
·         Volunteers
·         Employment agency workers
·         Leadership and Management (for SMEs)

Public Sector Units in an Apprenticeship Programme

The Business Administration apprenticeship is a generic training programme for any trainee/employee wishing to get a qualification and progress in a career in Admin. The units within the NVQ part of the programme are generic and hence designed as a 'one size fits all' for would-be Admin workers.

The West Midlands Public Sector Compact have designed an extra unit for Buisness Admin apprentices working in the public sector. The title of the unit is called 'Serving the Public' and the unit can also be used in the induction programme for new recruits to the sector.  To find out more contact Mickey Burke of the West Midlands Public Sector Compact by emailing micheal.burke@lsc.gov.uk

This free training for staff (there is no requirement to become a union member) is provided by Union Learn.  Contact Gary O’Donnel for more details godonnell@tuc.org.uk

European Social Funding (ESF)

Offers “value-added” learning programmes.  Examples of new ESF funded learning opportunities:

  • Support to move staff onto Level 4 professional apprenticeships. Provided by Boston College (rebecc-c@boston.ac.uk) and Lincoln College (sturnbull@lincolncollege.ac.uk)
  • Moving NEETs (young people not in Education, Employment or Training) into work. Provided by New College Stamford (gpowell@stamford.ac.uk) and Skegness College of Vocational Training (jsodonnell@fsmail.net)
  • Tackling worklessness. Provided by Boston College and their delivery partners around the county (Pedersen@boston.ac.uk) and Pelican Trust (Stacey@pelicantrust.org).  Skills for Jobs aims to tackle worklessness by reducing the number of individuals not in employment through more effective engagement, and moving individuals into sustainable jobs. Individuals receive an initial assessment, followed by commissioned/tailored programmes of learning, coaching and support, matching skills need to job content/skills requirement, addressing barriers to employment and including post-employment support for individuals.
